There are a bunch of trainers out there trying to teach entrepreneurs how to hire an international Virtual Assistant. I get why - having a VA has absolutely transformed my business and made it possible for me to get more out of each and every day.
Unfortunately, many trainers are DEAD WRONG about some pretty HUGE elements in hiring an International VA, and these mistakes can cost entrepreneurs a TON of time, energy, and money.
1. We’re told we should hire for a single project.
When we hire for something small, it doesn’t give us the time to really train a VA to ensure we get the high quality we expect for our business. Even when you have just a single project to get done, it takes a bunch of time to get the instructions together, and almost inevitably you end up paying way more for a bunch of revisions and changes to get it even close to what you were originally looking for.
2. We’re told we should hire a “jack of all trades” VA.
On the flip side of the same coin, we’re often taught that we should hire a Virtual Assistant that handles EVERYTHING we don’t want - from booking flights to dealing with customer service calls. Unfortunately, if you have someone who is extremely talented at all these things, you’re looking at paying a LOT more money. More often, though, you’ll get a more affordable VA who just isn’t that great at anything they do for your business because they don’t have the time to dig in and master it.
3. We’re not taught how to set up our businesses to handle a VA.
Most trainers skirt over this issue. They touch on it briefly without ever giving you any realistic idea on what you need to do to prepare for a Virtual Assistant. The fact is, your business HAS to be ready. You have to look at your business differently. You’re not hiring someone to get some work done. You’re hiring a team member. You’re hiring a lifetime asset, someone who could add so much more to your business than you can do alone. If you aren’t ready for that, you’re going to have a really hard time managing and retaining your VA.
4. We’re not trained how to manage.
Instead, we’re told that it’s “so easy” to hire an international VA. We’re not told how to handle that VA on the back side. You need to learn how to inspire and educate your new employee. The fact of the matter is, your business will need you to know how to manage at some point in the future. If it’s not with a Virtual Assistant, you’re going to end up hiring eventually. How do you get them really pumped up to add value to your company?
5. We’re told it’s crazy easy.
Remember what I mentioned above? A lot of entrepreneurs are taught to believe it’s extremely EASY to hire a Virtual Assistant. And, while it may be pretty easy to get just anybody as a Virtual Assistant, it’s a lot harder to guarantee you get a highly qualified, skilled, and energetic Virtual Assistant. Don’t forget, you’re hiring an employee. If you don’t hire right early on, it can become extremely costly for your business, between time and energy lost in having to fire and rehire.
